History of Evant
The town of Evant started as a settlement called "Langford Cove" in 1855. A man named Asa Langford and his family were the first to settle there. Asa Langford even became the first postmaster when the "Cove" post office opened in February 1876. By the late 1850s, Langford had built a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a sawmill nearby.
Later, in the late 1870s, a man named Evan T. Brooks bought a large piece of land from Langford. In 1881, Mr. Brooks generously gave 60 acres (about 24 hectares) of his land to be sold and settled as a town. Because of his gift, the community changed its name to "Evant" in 1884, honoring him. By the 1890s, the community had a cotton gin, three general stores, a gristmill (for grinding grain), and a hotel. At that time, its population was around 10 residents.
Evant continued to grow, reaching its largest population of 550 people in the 1950s. The town officially became an incorporated town in the mid-1970s. At that time, its population was 540. The number of people living in Evant has slowly decreased since then. According to the 1990 census, the town's population was 444, and by 2000, it had dropped to 393.
