Evelyne E. Bradley (born March 1, 1925, died May 21, 2013) was an important American judge from the Navajo Nation. She worked as a district judge for the Navajo Nation from 1984 until she retired in 1995. Evelyne Bradley was a pioneer, being one of the first women to ever become a judge in the Navajo Nation.

Evelyne Bradley's Early Life

Evelyne Bradley was born on March 1, 1925, in a hospital in Fort Defiance, Arizona. Her Navajo clan was the Bitter Water, born for Towering House. Her grandparents on her father's side were from the Red House People clan. Her grandparents on her mother's side were from the Cliff Dwellers People clan.

She grew up in a place called Cross Canyon, which is close to the town of Ganado, Arizona. Evelyne went to North Phoenix High School in Phoenix, Arizona. She also studied at the Haskell Institute, which is now known as Haskell Indian Nations University, in Lawrence, Kansas.

Evelyne Bradley's Career as a Judge

Before becoming a judge, Evelyne Bradley held many different jobs. She worked for the U.S. government and the Navajo government. She was employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She also worked for the Office of Navajo Economic Opportunity. Later, she worked for the Navajo Housing Authority. She even worked as a court reporter, which means she wrote down everything said in court.

In 1984, Evelyne Bradley became a district judge for the Navajo Nation. She served as a judge until she retired in 1995. As a district judge, she worked in different areas of the Navajo Nation. These areas included the Ramah Navajo Indian Reservation, Tuba City, and Kayenta, Arizona.

After retiring from her role as a Navajo Nation judge, Evelyne Bradley was elected. She became a Justice of the Peace for Navajo County, Arizona. A Justice of the Peace is a local judge who handles minor legal cases. Her office for this job was in Kayenta, Arizona. On January 9, 2007, she performed an important ceremony. She gave the oath of office to President of the Navajo Nation, Joe Shirley, Jr., for his second term. This means she officially swore him into his position.

Evelyne Bradley's Passing

Evelyne Bradley passed away on May 21, 2013. She was 88 years old. She is remembered by her four children. She also had 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Her funeral was held at the Good Shepherd Mission in Fort Defiance, Arizona.
