Ewa Demarczyk (born January 16, 1941, died August 14, 2020) was a famous Polish singer. She was known for a special style of music called "sung poetry". She also performed at a famous cabaret called Piwnica pod Baranami.
Many people thought Ewa was one of the most talented and exciting singers in Polish history. She was loved for her unique way of singing, her strong feelings, and her amazing stage presence. In the 1960s, some even compared her to the famous French singer Édith Piaf. In Poland, she was often called "the Dark Angel" because of her powerful and sometimes mysterious performances.

Ewa Demarczyk's Life Story
Early Career and Big Successes
Ewa started singing in 1961 with a student group called Cyrulik. After a year, she joined a famous cabaret called Piwnica pod Baranami. There, she met Zygmunt Konieczny, a composer she worked with for four years.
Her first big success was in 1963 at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole. She won an award for her songs "Karuzela z madonnami", "Taki pejzaż", and "Czarne anioły". Later that year, she sang at the Sopot International Song Festival. Polish journalists named her the best artist of 1963. In 1964, she won second place in Sopot for "Grande Valse Brillante". She also performed at the famous Olympia in Paris and at a special event for the United Nations.
Education and First Album
In 1966, Ewa graduated from the Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts. This was a drama school, but she never acted in films. That same year, she started working with another composer, Andrzej Zarycki. In 1967, her first album came out. It was called Ewa Demarczyk śpiewa piosenki Zygmunta Koniecznego. This album was a huge hit and sold over 100,000 copies, earning a platinum award.
Touring the World
Around the late 1960s and early 1970s, Ewa traveled all over the world. She visited countries like Italy, France, Germany, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, United States, Australia, United Kingdom, and Finland. She performed in many famous places, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Chicago Theatre.
Later Career and Retirement
Ewa left Piwnica pod Baranami in 1972. Two years later, her next album was released. It had new Polish songs and four of her old hits sung in Russian. This album was released in Russia and sold millions of copies. Later in the 1970s, she received an award at the Opole Festival and the Order of Polonia Restituta, a high honor in Poland.
Her live album from 1982, simply called Live, was also very popular. It earned a gold award in Poland. In the mid-1980s, Ewa started her own theater in Kraków. Even though it faced some challenges, it created a lot of interest before it closed. In the 1990s, her albums were re-released on CD. Ewa also received many awards for her important contributions to Polish culture. She continued to perform live until the late 1990s.
Ewa Demarczyk gave her last concert on November 8, 1999, at the Grand Theatre in Poznań. After that, she stopped performing in public. In 2001, a foundation called Teatr Ewy Demarczyk was created to honor her. She passed away on August 14, 2020, at the age of 79.
