Ex Girlfriend was an American girl group made up of Monica Boyd, Julia Robertson, Stacy Francis, and Tisha Hunter. The group first started in the mid-1980s under the name Petite. Its original members were Kimberly Davis, Monica Boyd, Julia Robertson, and Tisha Hunter.

After their first album Teens came out in 1986, Kimberly Davis left the group. The group then changed its name to Ex Girlfriend in 1989. This happened in Brooklyn, New York, with help from the new jack swing group Full Force. The members even added "X" to their last names as part of their new group idea.

In 1991, Ex Girlfriend became very popular with their first album, X Marks the Spot. This album included hit songs like "Why Can't You Come Home" and "You (You're the One for Me)". After releasing their second album It's a Woman Thang in 1994, the group broke up in 1995. Each member then started their own projects.

The Start of Ex Girlfriend: From Petite to Pop Stars

Early Days as Petite (1984–1988)

In 1984, Kimberly Davis, Julia Robertson, Monica Boyd, and Tisha Hunter formed a girl group called Petite. They all met while attending the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

In 1985, they signed with York's Records in Brooklyn, New York. Later that year, they released their first song, "So Fine". This song reached number 86 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Their first album, Teens, came out in 1986. However, the album did not become widely popular outside of New York. After this, the group worked as background singers for other artists. Kimberly Davis decided to leave the group because she wanted to try new things with her music. Kennethia "Kenne" Pierce joined the group in 1988. Kenne released a song called "What Is He To You?" that featured Petite. In 1989, Kenne also left the group.

Becoming Ex Girlfriend and X Marks the Spot (1989–1992)

In 1989, the group Petite caught the attention of the male music group Full Force. Full Force began managing them and signed them to their own record label, Forceful Records. This label was part of Reprise Records.

Soon after, Stacy Francis joined the group. They then changed their name to Ex Girlfriend. The group members started using "X" in their last names. This was part of a cool new idea about "female militarism," which meant they were a strong, united female group. They also sang background vocals for other artists, like Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam on "Just Git It Together" (1989) and Jasmine Guy on "Try Me" (1990).

In mid-1991, Ex Girlfriend released their first song as Ex Girlfriend, "Why Can't You Come Home". This song became a big hit, reaching the top five on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Because of its success, they performed on popular TV shows like Soul Train.

In October 1991, they released their first album, X Marks the Spot. It reached number thirty-nine on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album's second song, "You (You're the One for Me)", reached number thirty-five on the R&B chart. Their last song from the album, "With All My Heart", did not make it onto the charts.

In October 1992, Ex Girlfriend released a song called "Colorless Love". This song was featured on the soundtrack for the movie Zebrahead.

It's a Woman Thang and Breaking Up (1994–1995)

In mid-1994, Ex Girlfriend released the song "X In Your Sex". In August 1994, their second album, It's a Woman Thang, came out. However, this album did not become popular on the music charts. After their second song from the album, "You for Me", also did not chart, the album was not a big success. In 1995, the group decided to break up. Each member then started working on their own music and projects.

What Happened Next: Reunions and Solo Paths

After Ex Girlfriend broke up, all the members started their own careers. They each found different levels of success.

  • Stacy Francis got many main roles in theater plays. These included Mama, I Want To Sing! and the Broadway show Footloose.
  • Tisha Hunter sang background vocals and helped arrange the vocals for Yvette Michele's song "DJ Keep Playin' (Get Your Music On)" (1997).
  • Monica Boyd became a professional makeup artist.

In July 2008, Ex Girlfriend briefly reunited and performed together for the rest of that year. In 2009, Tisha Hunter released a song called "Kick Out the Jams". In 2011, Stacy Francis became a finalist on the first season of The X Factor USA. In May 2016, Julia Robertson released a duet song called "Body Rush" with singer-songwriter Norm Adams. They released another song, "Home Tonight", in 2017. They also released a holiday song called "My Kinda Christmas" in 2018.
