Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Melissa Storwick grew up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. From a young age, she loved watching performers on TV and would often entertain people, even during trips to the grocery store with her mom.
Her parents encouraged her to learn music. She took lessons for the trumpet and violin but fell in love with the piano. She eventually dropped her lessons and taught herself how to play by ear. Soon, she started singing along as she played.
In school, she joined musical theatre, where she could combine her love for singing, acting, and dancing. Her musical heroes included famous artists like Whitney Houston, The Beatles, and Freddie Mercury.
Career Journey
Winning The Next Star
In 2011, when she was 12, Melissa decided to audition for the TV talent show The Next Star. She heard about the auditions from her classmates and wanted to take her passion for music to the next level.
She stood out from thousands of other young singers and made it to the Top 6. During the show, she worked with music producer Zubin Thakkar to create her own song, "Good as Gone." She also performed many other songs, including "Stuttering" by Fefe Dobson and "My Guy" for a Motown-themed week.
At the end of the season, Melissa was announced as the winner. Her music video for "Good as Gone" became very popular, and she was the first contestant from the show to get over one million views on YouTube. After her win, she signed a record deal with Warner Music Canada and released more songs, including "Glitter in the Sky" and "Paper Heart."
Acting and Music as Charlie
After her success on The Next Star, Melissa wanted to try acting. In 2013, she was cast as Piper Gray in the YTV show Some Assembly Required. The show was about a group of kids who run a toy company and was on air from 2014 to 2016.
While acting, she continued her music career under the stage name Charlie. In 2015, she released the single "Ghosts," which became a hit in Canada. The song was inspired by a moment when she heard a loud noise while playing her keyboard, which sparked her imagination. She later released another single called "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."
Her talent earned her a spot in a songwriting workshop, which led to opportunities to work with producers in Europe. She spent time in Berlin, Germany, writing songs and developing her craft.
Becoming Faangs
After her experiences in Europe, Melissa moved to Los Angeles, California, to focus on songwriting. She began writing songs for other artists and created a new stage identity for herself: Faangs. She said the name was inspired by the competitive and "vicious" nature of the city.
In 2020, she released her first single as Faangs, called "Huh." She followed this with more singles, leading up to her debut album as Faangs, Teeth Out, in 2021.
In 2023, she co-wrote the song "Barbie Dreams" for the hit movie Barbie.
