Fagersta is a cool town in Sweden. It's the main place in Fagersta Municipality, located in Västmanland County. In 2010, about 11,130 people lived there.
Where is Fagersta?
Fagersta is located where two important railway lines meet. These lines connect cities like Ludvika, Västerås, Avesta, and Örebro.
The town is in the middle of a historic area called Bergslagen. This region is famous for having lots of natural resources like copper and iron ore. You can also find Fagersta on the 60th parallel north, which is an imaginary line around the Earth.
Fagersta's History
Mining has been happening in the Fagersta area since the 1400s! But it wasn't until the 1600s that mining became more organized. Later, in 1873, a big company called Fagersta Bruks AB was started to manage the mining.
Fagersta officially became a city in 1944. This happened when the industrial area of Fagersta joined with its nearby neighbor, Västanfors, which was more focused on services. Today, Fagersta is the main town for the Fagersta Municipality.
During Second World War, a special building called the Fagersta airspace surveillance tower was built. It was an observation platform used to protect a nearby steel mill from air attacks.
