Fahy is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Jura canton, which is like a state or region in Switzerland. Fahy is part of the Porrentruy district and is very close to the border with France.

A Look Back in Time: Fahy's History

Fahy has a long history! It was first mentioned in official papers way back in 1177. At that time, it was known as Fahyl. The village was owned by a religious group called the priory of Lanthenans.

Later, in 1477, the local bishop of Basel confirmed the rights of the villagers. In 1483, its name was written as Fahyt. Fahy was under the control of the bishop of Basel until the end of the 'Ancien Régime'. This was an old system of government in France and parts of Europe before the French Revolution.

For a long time, until about 1950, Fahy was mostly a farming village. Then, a factory that made parts for Peugeot cars opened there. This brought some industry to the area. The beautiful local church, called the Church of Saint-Pierre, was built in 1787-1788. It was designed by an architect named Pierre Francois Paris.

Fahy covers an area of about 7.78 square kilometers (about 3 square miles). A big part of this land, more than half (53%), is used for farming. About a quarter (25.6%) of the land is covered by forests.

The rest of the land is used for buildings and roads (8.6%) or is unproductive (12.9%). Unproductive land means it's not good for farming or building, like very rocky areas.

Fahy is located in the Porrentruy district. It sits right on the border with France, not far from a French town called Montbéliard.

Most people in Fahy speak French as their main language. About 95.6% of the people spoke French in 2000. A smaller number spoke German (1.8%) or Italian (1.6%).

In 2008, Fahy had almost an equal number of men and women. About 49.3% were male and 50.7% were female. Many people living in Fahy in 2000 were born there (48.2%). Others were born in the same canton (28.5%) or elsewhere in Switzerland (6%). About 14.2% were born outside Switzerland.

In 2000, children and teenagers (up to 19 years old) made up about 26.4% of the population. Adults (20-64 years old) were the largest group at 56.7%. Seniors (over 64 years old) made up 16.8%.

Important Buildings: Heritage Sites

Some buildings in Fahy are very old and important. They are protected as heritage sites of national significance. This means they are special and need to be preserved.

Two of these buildings are a farm house and a regular house, both located at Bout-Dessous. The whole village of Fahy is also part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. This shows how important its history and architecture are.

Some people belonged to other Christian churches (3.63%) or were Islamic (0.52%). About 3.89% of the population did not belong to any church.

Learning in Fahy: Education

In Fahy, about 27.7% of the people have finished non-mandatory upper secondary education. This is like high school. About 8.5% have gone on to higher education, like a university.

The school system in the Jura canton works like this:

• Two years of non-required Kindergarten.
• Six years of Primary school.
• Three years of required lower Secondary school. Here, students are grouped by their abilities.
• After lower Secondary, students can choose to go to a three or four-year upper Secondary school. They can also go to a higher education school or start an apprenticeship (learning a trade on the job).

In the 2009–10 school year, no students were attending school directly in Fahy. However, some students from Fahy went to schools in other towns.
