Plot Summary
A Tear Opens a Portal
The story begins with Doris Robertson (Kyla Pratt). She is a sad teenager. She misses her grandfather very much. Her foster sister, Lauri (Dania Ramirez), tries to get her to be more social. One day, Doris is watching Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids on TV. A tear falls from her eye and hits the TV remote. This tear magically opens a portal to the cartoon world!
Fat Albert (Kenan Thompson) sees Doris. He realizes she needs help. He jumps out of the TV and into the real world. His friends, Rudy (Shedrack Anderson III), Dumb Donald (Marques Houston), Mushmouth (Jermaine Williams), Bucky (Alphonso McAuley), and Old Weird Harold (Aaron Frazier), follow him. Bill (Keith Robinson) stays behind in the cartoon world. He promises to cover for them. Doris says she is fine, but the cartoon gang knows she is not.
Exploring the Real World
The cartoon characters quickly learn about the real world. They are amazed by new technology. They follow Doris to school. Fat Albert starts to like Lauri. A boy named Reggie, who likes Lauri, challenges Albert to a race. Albert easily wins the race.
To help Doris, the gang convinces some cheerleaders to invite everyone to a party. Doris agrees to go, even though she is not sure. At the party, Lauri dances with Albert. Reggie tries to make Lauri jealous by dancing with Doris. When Lauri does not notice, Reggie tries to kiss Doris. Doris gets upset. Albert tells Reggie to stay away from her.
Changes and Challenges
The next day, Doris goes to school. She asks the gang to go to the park instead of following her. In the real world, the cartoon characters start to change. Harold, who is usually clumsy, plays basketball perfectly. Mushmouth, who usually mumbles, learns to speak clearly from a little girl. Donald goes to the library. He can read without his pink face covering hat.
When Doris takes them home, Bucky, Harold, and Donald jump back into the TV. But then, a news report interrupts the show. This stops the other four from going back. Albert and Bill have an argument about returning. The gang takes Doris and Lauri to a fair in a car made of junk. Rudy asks Doris if she would date him if he were a real person. Doris says yes.
Meeting the Creator
Fat Albert needs advice. He finds his creator, Bill Cosby. Albert tells him about their problem. Bill Cosby is surprised at first. Then, he explains that Fat Albert's character is based on Doris's grandfather, Albert Robertson. This is why Doris felt like she knew Fat Albert. Mr. Cosby warns Albert that he must return to the cartoon world. If he does not, he will turn into dust.
Albert is sad. He tells Lauri he has to leave. Lauri thinks he is being insensitive. The next day, Mushmouth, Rudy, and Bill jump back into the TV. Albert goes to a track meet where Doris and Lauri are competing. He encourages Doris, and she wins. Reggie sees that the gang is from the TV. He tries to threaten Albert, but Albert pushes him away.
Saying Goodbye
Albert rushes to the girls' house on a borrowed skateboard. He says goodbye to Doris and Lauri. Then, he jumps back into the TV. He manages to take back the focus of the show from some bullies. Russell, still in the cartoon world, sees this happen.
Later, Bill Cosby and his friends, who inspired the cartoon characters, stand at Albert Robertson's grave. As the camera shows each man, images of their cartoon versions appear. Doris watches them from a distance. The old men race away, showing they are still young at heart. Before the credits, Fat Albert tells the audience to watch the credits and help each other.
