Dania Ramirez was born in Santo Domingo, which is in the Dominican Republic. From a very young age, she knew she wanted to be an actress. As a child, she loved to act out scenes from TV shows for her family.

When she was 15, a modeling scout found her while she was working in a store. This led to her first small part in a soda commercial. After this, she decided to become a serious actress. She studied acting at the Actor's Workshop in New York City.

Ramirez started college at Montclair State University when she was 16. She graduated in 2001. She was also a talented volleyball player there. Her skills placed her among the top five players in several areas. In 2001, she moved to Los Angeles to start her acting career.

Dania Ramirez became engaged to director John Beverly "Bev" Land in September 2011. They got married on a beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on February 16, 2013. Bev Land has a son named Kai Miles from a previous marriage.

In July 2013, Dania announced she was expecting twins. In December of that year, she gave birth to a boy and a girl.
