The ALMA Awards are special awards that celebrate the best contributions by American Latinos in music, TV shows, and movies. These awards also help make sure that Latino people are shown fairly and accurately in the media. The word alma means "soul" in Spanish and Portuguese.

History of the ALMA Awards

The ALMA Awards were created by an organization called UnidosUS. This group works to improve opportunities for Latino people in the United States. The first award shows happened in 1987. They were called the "BRAVO Awards" back then.

In 1995, the awards were shown on the Fox TV channel. The name changed to the "American Latino Media Arts Awards" in 1997. Then, ABC started showing the awards. However, there was a delay, and the awards were postponed until 1998.

Sometimes, the award ceremonies took a break. For example, there were no shows from 2003 to 2005. In 2008, the trophy itself was redesigned to look new and fresh. ABC stopped airing the shows in 2009.

The awards were also canceled in 2010. The organizers wanted to make the 2011 show even bigger and better. In 2011, the awards returned on a new TV channel, NBC. They were canceled again for 2015.

In 2018, the Fuse TV channel announced that it would start showing the ALMA Awards. They partnered with UnidosUS to bring the show back.
