Federico López Camacho (born March 26, 1962 – died November 6, 2006) was a famous Puerto Rican professional basketball player. Many people knew him as Fico López. He played for the Mets de Guaynabo team for many years, from 1981 to 1997.

Even though he was born in Mexico, Fico López played for the Puerto Rican national team. He won several championships in the Puerto Rican league alongside his brother-in-law, Mario Morales.

Fico López's Basketball Journey

Federico López was born in Mexico City, Mexico. His parents were from Cuba. His father, Federico López Sr., was also a basketball star in Cuba during the 1940s and 1950s. Fico López grew up playing sports at the Caparra Country Club from age 8. This court later had his name.

Playing for Puerto Rico's National Team

Fico López became one of the best players on the national team of Puerto Rico. He was part of a special team that made history. They were the first Puerto Rican national team to win a game against a United States national team. This big game happened in Mexico.

He also represented Puerto Rico in the 1988 Summer Olympics. These Olympic Games took place in Seoul, South Korea. He helped his team compete against the best basketball players in the world. Fico López also won medals for Puerto Rico at the Pan American Games. He earned a bronze medal in 1987 and a gold medal in 1991.

Remembering Fico López

Fico López passed away in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, on November 6, 2006. He was 44 years old. He was playing volleyball with friends at the Caparra Country Club when he died. This was the same place where he started his sports journey as a young boy.
