Frederike Johanna Maria "Femke" Heemskerk is a famous Dutch swimmer. She was born on September 21, 1987. Femke is known for her amazing skills in freestyle swimming. She is also very good at backstroke and medley swimming.

Femke has set many records during her career. She helped her team break world records in relay races. She also holds national records in several individual swimming events. Femke was a key swimmer for the Energy Standard team in the International Swimming League.

Femke Heemskerk's Swimming Journey

Starting Her Career

Femke Heemskerk began her international swimming career in 2005. She first swam in relay races at the World Championships. In 2007, she won her first major medal. It was a bronze medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay at the World Championships.

Big Wins in 2008

The year 2008 was very important for Femke. She was part of the Dutch team that broke a world record in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay. This happened at the European Aquatics Championships. Soon after, at the World Short Course Championships, she helped set two more relay records. She also won her first individual medal, a silver, in the 200 meter freestyle.

Olympic Gold in Beijing

Femke's biggest achievement came at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She won a gold medal with the 4×100 meter freestyle relay team. Her teammates were Inge Dekker, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, and Marleen Veldhuis. They swam incredibly fast, almost breaking their own world record.

More Success and World Titles

After the Olympics, Femke continued to shine. In 2011, she won another gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships. This was again in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay. She swam the final part of the race, helping her team win.

London Olympics Silver

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Femke and her relay teammates won a silver medal. They were the defending champions in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay. Australia won the gold medal that year.

First Individual World Title

In 2014, Femke achieved a major personal goal. She won her first individual world title at the World Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar. She won the 100 meter freestyle race. She also helped her team win three more gold medals in freestyle relay events.

Later Career and Training Changes

After the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, Femke decided to make a change. She moved to France to train with a new coach, Philippe Lucas. This helped her continue to improve her swimming.

Third Olympics in Rio

Femke competed in her third Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. She swam in the 100 meter and 200 meter freestyle races. She also participated in the 4×100 meter and 4×200 meter freestyle relays. Her 4×100 meter freestyle relay team finished fourth.

In 2017, Femke continued to compete strongly. She won the 200 meter freestyle at the Swim Cup The Hague. She also qualified for the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest. There, she won the 200 meter freestyle event.

In 2019, Femke joined the International Swimming League. She swam for the Energy Standard team. Her team won the championship title in Las Vegas, Nevada, in December of that year.
