How Fenwick Island Was Formed

The Great Storm of 1933
For many years, Fenwick Island was connected to Assateague Island. Assateague Island is located to the south. But in 1933, a very strong hurricane hit the coast. This powerful storm created a new waterway. It carved a channel right through the land. This channel separated Fenwick Island from Assateague Island. The new inlet was made permanent. It now allows water to flow between the ocean and the bays.
The Assawoman Canal
Another important waterway shaped Fenwick Island. This is the Assawoman Canal. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built this canal in 1891. If the Assawoman Canal wasn't there, Fenwick Island would still be connected to the mainland of Delaware. The canal helps to keep the island separate. It also provides a waterway for boats.
