Fernando Suárez González (born August 10, 1933 – died April 29, 2024) was an important Spanish politician and legal expert. He was known for being the last living minister who served in the government of Francisco Franco, a leader of Spain many years ago.
He played a key role in Spain's move towards democracy. In 1976, he helped create a law called the Political Reform Act. This law was very important because it helped change Spain from a dictatorship to a democratic country.

Life and Early Career
Fernando Suárez was born on August 10, 1933. He studied law at the University of Oviedo in Spain. Later, he earned his PhD from the University of Bologna in Italy.
He became a university teacher at the Complutense University of Madrid. There, he taught about labor law, which deals with rules for workers and jobs. In 1969, he returned to the University of Oviedo. He became a chairman and then a dean there.
Government Roles
During the time of Francisco Franco's government, Suárez also worked in public service. In 1973, he became the general director of a group called the Instituto Español de Emigración. This group helped manage policies about people moving to and from Spain.
In 1975, he joined the last government under General Francisco Franco. He served as the Minister of Labour and also as the Third Deputy Prime Minister.
Moving Towards Democracy
After the political changes in Spain, Fernando Suárez continued his career. He joined the People's Alliance political party. Later, he became a member of the People's Party.
Serving in Parliament
From 1982 to 1986, he was a member of the Congress of Deputies. This is like Spain's main parliament.
When Spain joined the European Economic Community in 1986, Suárez became a member of the European Parliament. He continued to serve in the European Parliament after elections in 1987 and 1989.
In the European Parliament, he held important positions. He was a vice-chairman of the Budget Committee. He also served as a vice-chairman of the Group for European Democracy. He was part of the leadership team of the European People's Party.
Later Life and Legacy
Fernando Suárez also kept teaching at the UNED. In 2007, he became a member of the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas. This is a very respected academy for moral and political sciences.
Suárez passed away in Madrid on April 29, 2024, at the age of 90. He is remembered for his long career in Spanish politics and his role in Spain's transition to democracy.
