Fimbristylis is a group of plants known as sedges. These plants look a bit like grasses but are actually different. You might hear them called a fimbry or fimbristyle. There are between 200 and 300 different kinds of Fimbristylis plants found all over the world.
Some types of Fimbristylis naturally grow in certain places. But many have also been moved to new areas where they didn't originally grow. Sometimes, these plants can grow so much that they become known as weeds, meaning they grow where people don't want them, like in gardens or farms.
What Fimbristylis Looks Like
Fimbristylis plants usually have stiff, ridged stems. This means their stems have small lines or bumps on them. At the very top of the stem, they have cone-shaped groups of tiny flowers and seeds. These groups are called panicles of spikelets.
Where Fimbristylis Grows
You can usually find Fimbristylis plants in wet places. They love areas with lots of water, like marshes, swamps, or along the edges of rivers and ponds. They are most common and have the most different kinds in warm, tropical, and subtropical parts of the world. This includes places near the equator where it's usually hot and humid.
Different Kinds of Fimbristylis
Since there are so many types of Fimbristylis, they have different names. Here are a few examples:
- Fimbristylis autumnalis - This one is called the slender fimbry.
- Fimbristylis castanea - You might know this as the marsh fimbry.
- Fimbristylis dichotoma - This is sometimes called the two-leaf fimbrystylis.
- Fimbristylis ferruginea - This type is known as the rusty sedge.
- Fimbristylis littoralis - This is often called the lesser fimbristylis.
- Fimbristylis miliacea - This one looks a bit like grass, so it's called the grasslike fimbry.
- Fimbristylis spathacea - This plant is sometimes called hurricanegrass.
