First Hill is a well-known neighborhood in Seattle, Washington, United States. It gets its name because it's the first big hill you reach when traveling east from downtown Seattle towards Lake Washington.
This area is sometimes called "Pill Hill" because it has many hospitals and medical centers. It's also known as "Profanity Hill" because it used to be a tough climb for people and horses!

First Hill is located right next to downtown Seattle. It has clear boundaries that help define where it is.
Where is First Hill?
- To the west, it's bordered by Interstate 5, which separates it from downtown.
- To the north, you'll find E. Pike and E. Madison Streets, with Capitol Hill beyond them.
- To the south, Yesler Way marks the edge, leading to the International District.
- Its eastern border is usually considered to be around Broadway and Boren Avenues, though some maps might show it extending to 12th Avenue. Beyond this are the Cherry Hill and Central District neighborhoods.

Getting around First Hill and connecting to other parts of Seattle is easy with public transport.
The First Hill Streetcar
A Link light rail station was once planned for First Hill, but it wasn't built due to ground challenges. Instead, the First Hill Streetcar was created. It started running in January 2016. This streetcar travels along Broadway and Jackson Street. It connects First Hill to the International District / Chinatown and Capitol Hill light rail stations, making it simple to explore the city.
