Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Flat Creek is a small waterway, often called a stream, located in the U.S. state of Missouri. It flows through three different counties: Benton, Morgan, and Pettis. Flat Creek is a "tributary" of the Lamine River. This means it flows into and joins the Lamine River.

Where Does Flat Creek Begin and End?

Every stream has a beginning, called its headwaters. Flat Creek starts in the northern part of Benton County. This is west of a small town named Ionia. From there, the stream flows towards the northwest.

It passes by a place called Brandon Siding. Then, it enters Pettis County, flowing east of Windsor. The creek then turns to the northeast. It goes under Missouri Route 52, which is a state highway, south of the city of Sedalia.

Flat Creek doesn't flow in a straight line. It "meanders," meaning it twists and turns like a snake. It flows east, passing south of Smithton. Then, it enters Morgan County. It goes under another highway, Missouri Route 135. Finally, Flat Creek reaches its "confluence." This is where it joins with Richland Creek. When these two streams meet, they form the larger Lamine River.

What's in a Name?

The name "Flat Creek" might sound simple, but it has an interesting origin. It probably comes from a French word. The French word plat means "shallow." So, it's likely that Flat Creek was named because it is a shallow stream.
