Flatwoods is a city in Greenup County, Kentucky, USA. In 2020, about 7,325 people lived there. This makes it the biggest city in Greenup County. Flatwoods is part of a larger area called the Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area.

Many people who live in Flatwoods work in other nearby cities. This is why it's sometimes called a "bedroom community." Some residents work for companies like CSX Transportation or Marathon Petroleum. Others work at King's Daughters Medical Center.

History of Flatwoods

The area we now call Flatwoods had a different name long ago. It was first known as "Advance." An early church, Advance Methodist Church, started a Sunday school there in 1860.

Later, the name changed to "Cheap," after a clergyman named John Cheap. But the farming community went back to calling it "Advance" when a post office opened in 1918.

In 1938, the post office was renamed "Flatwoods." The town officially became a city that same year, keeping the name Flatwoods. The name comes from the area's unique flat, wooded land. This flat land is part of an ancient river valley, about 650 feet higher than the Ohio River valley nearby.

Because of its flat land and low taxes, Flatwoods became a popular place to build new homes in the 1950s and 1960s. Many new neighborhoods were built and quickly filled with families. This growth happened partly because the nearby city of Ashland had already used most of its available land for building.

Geography and Landscape

Flatwoods is located in the eastern part of Greenup County. It sits between the cities of Raceland to the northwest and Russell to the southeast. U.S. Route 23 (Seaton Avenue) runs along the northeast side of Flatwoods. This highway goes southeast about 6 miles to Ashland and northwest about 7 miles to Greenup.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Flatwoods covers a total area of about 8.4 square kilometers (3.26 square miles). Almost all of this area is land.

The land in Flatwoods is quite unusual for eastern Kentucky. Most of eastern Kentucky has a "hill and valley" landscape. But Flatwoods has flat or gently rolling land on a single raised area. This flat land was formed by the ancient Teays River. This huge river flowed through the area long ago, and it was much larger than the Ohio River we see today.
