History of Greenup
How Greenup Started
Greenup was first planned out in 1803 and 1804 by a man named Robert Johnson. He was a pioneer and a lawmaker who owned the land. When Greenup County was formed, Johnson's settlement was chosen to be the main town. The county was named after Christopher Greenup, who was a congressman and later a governor.
The settlement was first called "Greenupsburg". A post office opened there on July 1, 1811. The state government officially made it a town on February 4, 1818. It became an official city thirty years later, on February 29, 1848. The name was shortened to "Greenup" on March 13, 1872. This was partly to avoid confusion with another town called Greensburg.
Railroad and Floods
Around 1865, the Eastern Kentucky Railway Company set up its main office, train yard, and station in eastern Greenup, in an area called Riverton.
In 1937, a very big flood on the Ohio River caused a lot of damage in Greenup. Many other towns along the river were also affected. Some people moved away permanently after the flood. Because of this, Greenup's population dropped by 5.5% by the time of the 1940 census.
Greenup is one of only three county seats in Kentucky that has the same name as its county. The other two are Harlan and Henderson.
