Greensburg is a city in Green County, Kentucky, United States. It is the main town and the county seat of Green County. In 2020, about 2,179 people lived there.
The historic downtown area of Greensburg is very special. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This area includes the oldest courthouse west of the Allegheny Mountains.

Where is Greensburg Located?
Greensburg is in the eastern part of Green County. It sits on the north side of the Green River. This river flows west and eventually joins the Ohio River.
How to Get to Greensburg?
U.S. Route 68 goes through Greensburg as Main Street. This road can take you northeast about 11 miles to Campbellsville. It also goes southwest about 25 miles to Edmonton.
Kentucky Route 61 also runs through Greensburg with US 68. KY 61 goes northwest about 40 miles to Elizabethtown. It also heads southeast about 19 miles to Columbia.

A Look at Greensburg's History
The area where Greensburg now stands was first settled in 1780. It was known as "Glover's Station." This name came from John Glover, a local landowner. He received land here after the American Revolutionary War.
Green County was created in 1792. It was named after Nathanael Greene, a famous general from the Revolutionary War. Greensburg was then planned out and officially started in 1794. It became the main town for the county. A year later, in 1795, it became an official city.
The central Public Square was also designed in 1795. It still looks much the same today. The only changes have been paving it and adding concrete dividers.
Important Firsts in Greensburg
- The first post office opened in 1807. It was sometimes called "Greensburg" and sometimes "Greensburg Court House."
- The first courthouse in Greensburg was built in 1803.
- The first bank, Greensburg Independent Bank, opened in 1818.
- The first known school was Greenburg Academy. It was open from 1815 to 1818.
