Story of Juli and Bryce
The film's story begins in 1957. A second-grader named Bryce Loski moves into a new house. There, he meets Julianna "Juli" Baker. When Juli looks into Bryce's eyes, she feels it's love at first sight. However, Bryce is not so sure and tries to avoid her.
Four years later, in 1961, Bryce tries to get Juli to leave him alone. He decides to date Sherry Stalls. Juli thinks Sherry is not a good person. Bryce's best friend, Garrett, becomes interested in Sherry. Garrett eventually tells Sherry the truth about Bryce's plan. Sherry does not take this news well. After Juli finds out they broke up, she hopes she might have a chance with Bryce again. But as time goes on, they both start to rethink their choices.
The Sycamore Tree and Eggs
Bryce's grandfather, Chet Duncan, moves in with his family. Juli loves a large, old sycamore tree. She spends a lot of time in it. Sadly, the tree is cut down, which makes Juli very upset. Her father gives her a painting of a sycamore tree. This helps her feel better.
Juli is also hurt when she finds out Bryce has been throwing away the eggs she gave him. He was worried about getting sick from them. Meanwhile, Chet helps Juli clean up her yard. During this time, Bryce slowly starts to develop feelings for Juli.
Misunderstandings and Feelings
Juli returns home after visiting her uncle Daniel, who has a disability. She overhears Bryce agreeing with Garrett, who is saying mean things about her. This makes Juli lose all interest in Bryce.
The Loski family invites the Bakers over for dinner. When they arrive, Juli confronts Bryce about what she heard. She rejects him. After dinner, Juli apologizes for how she acted. Bryce feels confused because Juli isn't holding a grudge, which makes him think she truly doesn't care about him anymore.
The Basket Boy Auction
Later, a "basket boy" auction is coming up. Juli learns that Sherry plans to bid on Bryce. Bryce worries about what will happen if Juli tries to outbid Sherry. But Juli bids on a boy named Eddie Trulock instead. She does this because no one else was bidding for him.
During lunch, Bryce cannot stop watching Juli talk with Eddie. He is talking with Sherry. Bryce feels very jealous. He gets up from his table and walks over to Juli. He grabs her shoulders and tries to kiss her. Juli quickly moves away and leaves, feeling embarrassed. After this, Juli's feelings are hurt. Garrett and Bryce end their friendship because of a disagreement about Juli. Bryce tries to talk to Juli, but she refuses to speak to him because of what he did.
A New Beginning
Two days later, Bryce plants a young sycamore tree in Juli's front yard. This is his way of showing her how he feels. When Juli sees this, she goes out to help him. She realizes that after all these years, they have never truly talked to each other. As they plant the tree, their hands touch. They look into each other's eyes and share loving smiles, finally connecting.
