Flipped is a movie from 2010 directed by Rob Reiner. It is based on a popular 2001 book by Wendelin Van Draanen called Flipped. The film tells the story of two young neighbors, Juli Baker and Bryce Loski. They have very different ideas about each other. Juli develops a big crush on Bryce from the moment they meet. Bryce, however, tries to avoid her. Over several years, their feelings change and grow. They learn important lessons about friendship, family, and seeing people for who they truly are.

The movie stars Callan McAuliffe as Bryce and Madeline Carroll as Juli. It also features Rebecca De Mornay, Anthony Edwards, and John Mahoney. Flipped was first shown in United States movie theaters in August 2010. Many people enjoy this film for its honest look at what it's like to be a teenager.

The Story of Juli and Bryce

Early Encounters

In 1957, 7-year-old Bryce Loski moves in next door to Julianna "Juli" Baker. Juli feels a strong connection to Bryce right away. She believes it's a special kind of feeling. Bryce, however, feels shy and tries to avoid her.

For the next four years, Juli continues to have a big crush on Bryce. She often tries to spend time with him. Bryce, wanting to get away, pretends to like another girl, Sherry Stalls. Bryce's friend Garrett accidentally tells Sherry the truth. This makes Sherry upset, and she stops liking Bryce. Bryce feels embarrassed and hopes Juli will find someone else in seventh grade.

A Special Tree and New Responsibilities

The next year, Bryce's grandfather, Chet Duncan, moves in with the Loskis. Juli loves an old sycamore tree in her neighborhood. One day, workers start to cut it down. Juli tries to protect the tree by climbing it. She refuses to come down. After getting a lot of attention, her father, Richard, convinces her to come down. The tree is then removed. Juli is very sad. Her father gives her a painting of the tree, which helps her feel better. A local newspaper writes about Juli and the tree. Chet shows the article to Bryce, hoping he will understand Juli better. Bryce is still not convinced.

Juli starts raising chickens in her backyard for a school science fair project. She sells their eggs to neighbors. She also gives some eggs to the Loski family as a kind gesture. Juli is hurt when she finds out Bryce has been throwing her eggs away. His father worries about the eggs' quality. Bryce also uses the Bakers' messy yard as an excuse. Juli feels embarrassed and decides to clean up her yard.

Friendship and Family Matters

Grandfather Chet sees Juli working hard in her yard. He decides to help her. They become good friends. Bryce's father, Steven, criticizes the Bakers' property. Chet defends them, explaining that the Bakers rent their home. He also mentions that much of their money goes to care for Juli's uncle Daniel, who needs special support.

Chet encourages Juli to think more deeply about things. Juli starts to wonder if she truly likes Bryce anymore. Later, a classmate tells Juli that Bryce has been admiring her. But then, Juli overhears Bryce seemingly agreeing with Garrett. Garrett is making fun of Juli and her uncle Daniel. This makes Juli lose all interest in Bryce. What Juli doesn't know is that Bryce is actually upset with Garrett's mean comments. Bryce starts to distance himself from Garrett, but they remain friendly for a while.

Bryce's mother, Patsy, feels bad about how the Loskis have treated the Bakers. She invites them over for a family dinner. During the dinner, Juli talks to Bryce alone. She tells him she heard his conversation with Garrett. She calls him a coward for not standing up for her. After dinner, Juli apologizes to Bryce for her words. Bryce realizes that Juli now feels indifferent towards him. This makes Bryce feel sad. He starts to think about Juli in a new way, seeing her as a person, not just the girl who always chased him.

A School Event and Changing Feelings

The school's annual "basket boy" auction charity event is coming up. Boys are chosen to offer a homemade lunch, and students bid on them. Bryce is chosen as a basket boy. He hears that Sherry and another girl plan to bid for him. But Bryce doesn't care about them. He is focused on Juli, who has her egg money with her. However, Juli bids on another boy, Eddie Trulock, instead of Bryce. Sherry wins the bid for Bryce.

During the lunch, Bryce is not interested in talking to Sherry. He keeps watching Juli and Eddie. He finally understands his true feelings for Juli. He gets up and tries to express his feelings to her in front of everyone. Juli feels embarrassed and runs away. Bryce chases after her. Garrett confronts Bryce for leaving the "prettiest girl" in school. When Garrett makes fun of Juli again, Bryce ends their friendship. Bryce tries to talk to Juli and explain himself. He tries hard to reach her, but she won't see or speak to him.

A New Beginning

Two days later, Bryce gets permission from Juli's father, Richard. Bryce plants a young sycamore tree in Juli's front yard. He wants to show her how he truly feels. When Juli sees him, she joins him. She realizes that after all these years, they had never truly talked to each other. As they plant the tree together, their hands touch. They look into each other's eyes and smile, ready for a new start.
