Flobecq (pronounced "flo-bek" in French, or "vlooz-berg" in Dutch) is a small town in Belgium. It is part of Wallonia, which is the French-speaking region of Belgium. Flobecq is located in the Hainaut Province.

This town shares its borders with other towns like Ellezelles and Lessines in the same province. It also borders Brakel, which is in the East Flanders province. This border is special because it marks a "language border" between French and Dutch speaking areas.

As of January 1, 2018, Flobecq had about 3,420 people living there. The total area of the town is 23 square kilometers. This means there are about 150 people living in each square kilometer.

Flobecq is known as a place that attracts tourists. Every year, around January 17, the town holds a wonderful local celebration. This event honors Saint Antony.

Flobecq is also special because it offers "language facilities" for people who speak Dutch. This means that even though it's in a French-speaking area, Dutch speakers can get certain services in their own language.

Discovering Flobecq's Past

The town of Flobecq was once strongly connected to the city of Tournai. Because of this, people in Flobecq often spoke Picard, which is a language similar to French.

A Land of Debate and Change

Starting in the 1200s, the area where Flobecq is located was often argued over. Two powerful regions, the County of Flanders and the County of Hainaut, both wanted control. Because of these disagreements, the region was sometimes called "debate land." This name came from the Dutch words debattenland and the French words terre des débats.

Flobecq and the Language Border

In 1963, Belgium officially set its language borders. At that time, only one small village within Flobecq, called La Houppe or D'Hoppe, mainly had Dutch speakers. Even though it was Dutch-speaking, this village stayed in the French-speaking part of Belgium.

Because of this, Flobecq became a special place with "language facilities." This means that the town provides services in Dutch for its Dutch-speaking residents, even though French is the main language of the region.
