Florida (pronounced flo-REE-dah) is a town and a commune in Chile. It is located in the Concepción Province, which is part of the Biobío Region.

About Florida, Chile
Florida is a Chilean town that covers an area of about 608.6 square kilometers. It is known for its mix of urban and rural areas.
Population and People
According to a 2002 census, Florida had 10,177 people living there. This included 5,231 men and 4,946 women. About 3,875 people (38.1%) lived in the town's urban areas. The remaining 6,302 people (61.9%) lived in the rural areas around the town. Between 1992 and 2002, the population of Florida decreased slightly.
How Florida is Governed
As a commune, Florida is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a group called the communal council. The head of this council is an alcalde (mayor), who is chosen directly by the people every four years.
Local Leadership
From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Juan Vergara Reyes. The communal council during that time included several members from different political parties. These members work together to make decisions for the town.

This district also includes other towns like Tomé, Penco, Hualqui, Coronel, and Santa Juana. Representatives for this district have included Sergio Bobadilla (from the UDI) and Clemira Pacheco (from the PS).
In the Senate
For the Senate of Chile, which is the other part of Chile's parliament, Florida is in the 12th senatorial constituency. This area is known as Biobío-Cordillera. Senators for this constituency have included Alejandro Navarro Brain (from the MAS) and Hosain Sabag Castillo (from the PDC).
