La Florida (which means "the flowery" in Spanish) is a busy area in the southeast of Santiago, Chile. It's a place where many families live, mostly those in the middle to upper-middle class. La Florida is known for being a good place to live, ranking high in terms of how well people are doing. The current mayor is Rodolfo Carter.

People and Population in La Florida

La Florida is a large and growing area. In 2017, a count of the population (called a census) showed that La Florida had 382,701 people. All of these people lived in city areas. More than half of the residents, about 52.1%, were women.

Today, La Florida has about 402,433 people. This makes it the fourth most populated area in Chile. Only Puente Alto, Maipú, and Santiago have more people living in them.

Life Quality in La Florida

  • A very small number of people, about 3.1%, lived below the poverty line in 2015.
  • The area has a high "quality of life" score, meaning people generally live well here.
  • La Florida also scores high on the Human Development Index. This index measures things like how long people live, how much education they get, and their income. La Florida ranked 12th out of 346 areas in Chile in 2005 for this index.

How La Florida is Governed

La Florida is a "commune," which is like a local district or town. It is managed by a group called the municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The mayor is chosen by the people in an election every four years.

Rodolfo Carter Fernández has been the mayor of La Florida since 2011. He is part of a political group called Chile Vamos.

Local Council Members

The local council helps the mayor make decisions for La Florida. It has members from different political groups:

  • Six members are from conservative parties, mainly the UDI and RN.
  • One member is an independent, but is part of the Christian Democrats group.
  • Three members are from social democratic parties, including the PS and the PC.

Representing La Florida in Chile's Government

People from La Florida also represent the area in the national government.

  • In the Chamber of Deputies (which is like one part of the country's parliament), La Florida is represented by two people: Gustavo Hasbún and Camila Vallejo-Dowling.
  • In the Senate (the other part of the parliament), La Florida is represented by Manuel José Ossandón and Carlos Montes.

Education in La Florida

La Florida has several schools, including some that teach in other languages.

  • There used to be a German school called Deutsche Marienschule Santiago-La Florida.
  • There is also an English school called The American–British School of La Florida.
