Floriston is a small community in Nevada County, California. It is a "census-designated place," which means it's a special area defined for gathering population data. Floriston is located high up, about 5,400 feet (1,646 meters) above sea level.
You can find Floriston right on the Truckee River, about 10 miles (16 km) east-northeast of Truckee. It used to be an important stop for trains and a place with mills. Today, Floriston is a quiet residential area. In 2010, its population was 73 people.

The name Floriston comes from the many flowers found in the area. It likely uses the Latin or Spanish word flor, which means 'flower'.
A Look at Floriston's Past
The history of Floriston is closely tied to the railroad. A train station was first built here in the 1870s. It was originally called Bronco, named after a nearby creek. Later, in 1891, the Floriston post office officially opened, giving the community its current name.
Where is Floriston Located?
Floriston is situated east of Truckee. It sits deep inside the canyon of the Truckee River. The community is on a gently sloping area on the east side of the river. Interstate 80, a major highway, also passes nearby.
On both sides of the river, you'll see very steep canyon walls that rise thousands of feet high. Floriston is in a unique spot where the river makes a turn from flowing east to heading north.
Floriston's Weather
Floriston has a type of weather called a dry-summer continental climate. This means it gets a moderate amount of rain, but most of it falls as snow in the winter. The temperature changes a lot between day and night. Even in summer, the nights can be quite cold, though daytime temperatures are usually above freezing all year.
Floriston is located deep in a canyon on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. These mountains create a "rain shadow" effect. This means the mountains block some of the moisture, making the area a bit drier than places on the western side. However, Floriston is still greener than the desert valleys further east. It's like a special spot between the lush Sierra forests and the drier desert.
