Playing for Clubs
Flávio Conceição was born in Santa Maria da Serra, São Paulo, Brazil. He started his football journey with Rio Branco in 1992.
Early Career in Brazil
A year later, in 1993, Flávio joined Palmeiras. He played more than 100 games for this team. His great performances caught the eye of a Spanish club.
Moving to Spain: Deportivo La Coruña
After the 1996 Summer Olympics, the Spanish club Deportivo La Coruña paid about €5.2 million to sign him. Flávio played as a central midfielder alongside his fellow Brazilian, Mauro Silva. He became a very important player for Deportivo. He helped them become a strong team in Spanish football. In the 1999–2000 season, he scored four goals in 27 games. That year, Deportivo La Coruña won the La Liga title, which is the top football league in Spain!
Joining Real Madrid
In 2000, Flávio moved to another big La Liga team, Real Madrid. This transfer was worth €26 million. Even though he didn't play in every game, he helped Real Madrid win two league titles. He also won the UEFA Champions League in 2002. This is one of the biggest club competitions in Europe. In that competition, he even helped set up a goal in the semi-final against Barcelona.
Loan to Borussia Dortmund
In the 2003–04 season, Flávio went on loan to Borussia Dortmund in Germany. He didn't play as much there.
Playing in Turkey and Greece
In 2004, Flávio moved to Turkey to play for Galatasaray. In his only season there, he won the Turkish Cup. However, the team didn't qualify for the Champions League. This meant he could leave the club. So, he signed with Panathinaikos in Greece.
Retirement
Flávio faced some injuries and lost his good form while in Greece. He was released from his contract and decided to retire from football at the age of 32.
Playing for Brazil
Flávio Conceição also had a great career playing for the Brazilian national team. He played 45 games for his country and scored four goals.
Copa América and Confederations Cup
He was part of the Brazilian teams that won the Copa América in 1997 and 1999. The Copa América is a major football tournament for South American countries. He also played in two FIFA Confederations Cup tournaments. In the 1997 edition, Brazil won the trophy.
