Important Changes in 2021

In 2021, the Football Association of Iceland faced some serious challenges. People raised concerns about how the association handled reports of misconduct. An article was published that brought these issues to light.

Initially, KSÍ stated that it had not tried to hide any cases. However, a woman named Þórhildur Gyða Arnarsdóttir spoke out. She shared her experience from 2017, which involved a member of the national team. She said she had reported the incident to the police and later to KSÍ.

Þórhildur stated that KSÍ had promised to take action but did not. She also mentioned being offered a payment and asked to sign a confidentiality agreement. After her story became public, Guðni Bergsson, who was the president of KSÍ at the time, resigned from his position.

Following Guðni's resignation, two players, Kolbeinn Sigþórsson and Rúnar Már Sigurjónsson, were removed from the national team. Kolbeinn was later identified in connection with the incident Þórhildur described.

Many of KSÍ's member clubs and major sponsors demanded further changes. They wanted the entire board and manager to resign. Sponsors even threatened to end their contracts if the situation did not improve. Within two days of the president's resignation, the entire board of KSÍ also stepped down. This showed the importance of accountability in sports organizations.
