The Iceland women's national football team is a group of talented female football players who represent Iceland in international matches. They are often called Stelpurnar okkar, which means "Our Girls" in Icelandic. As of June 2025, FIFA ranks them as the 14th best women's national team in the world.

History of the Team

The Iceland women's national football team played its very first game on September 20, 1981. They faced Scotland and lost 3–2. Bryndís Einarsdóttir scored Iceland's first goal ever, and Ásta B. Gunnlaugsdóttir scored the other.

On October 30, 2008, the team made history by qualifying for the 2009 UEFA Women's Championship. This was the first time any Icelandic football team, men's or women's, had reached a major tournament. They had previously played in the 1995 UEFA Women's Championship, which was a knockout competition.

At the 2013 UEFA Women's Championship, they earned their first point in a big championship. This happened after they drew a game against Norway in the opening match.

A documentary called Stelpurnar okkar (Our Girls) was made about the team. It followed them during the qualifiers for the Women's Euro 2009. The film was first shown on August 14, 2009.
