What is the Ford Building Like?
The Ford Building was designed by a famous architect named Daniel Burnham. Construction started in 1907 and finished in 1908. In 2009, the building celebrated its 100th birthday!
It was one of the first buildings to use a strong steel frame inside. This made it possible to build much taller buildings. The Ford Building has 23 floors in total. There are 19 floors above ground and two basement floors. It also has two special top floors called penthouses.
From 1908 to 1913, the Ford Building was the tallest building in Detroit. Today, it is mostly used for offices and shops.
Building Style and Materials
Daniel Burnham designed the Ford Building with two main styles. These are called Neo-Classical and Neo-Renaissance. These styles use ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings. They also use ideas from the Renaissance period in Europe.
The building has a steel skeleton, which is like its bones. The outside is covered with terra cotta tiles. Terra cotta is a type of baked clay. White Italian marble is used for special decorations.
Daniel Burnham designed other famous buildings in Detroit. These include the David Whitney Building (built in 1915) and the Dime Building (built in 1912).
