Fort Forman was an important stockade fort built a long time ago. It was put up by Captain William Foreman when the French and Indian War began. This fort was located about three miles north of Romney in what is now West Virginia. It was near the South Branch Potomac River and the town of Vance. Fort Forman was used from 1755 until 1764.

What Was Fort Forman?

Fort Forman was a type of fort made from strong wooden posts, called a stockade. It was built to protect settlers during the French and Indian War. Captain William Foreman led its construction in 1755. The fort served as a safe place for people living in the frontier area.

The French and Indian War

The French and Indian War (1754-1763) was a big conflict in North America. It was mainly fought between Great Britain and France. Both sides had Native American allies. They were fighting over control of land and resources. Forts like Forman were crucial for defending settlements and controlling important areas during this time.

Foreman's Defeat

Years later, in 1777, Captain William Foreman led a group of soldiers from Hampshire County. They were heading to the Ohio River to help Fort Henry near Wheeling. On their journey, Foreman's group was caught in a surprise attack. This attack happened near "McMechen Narrows" on the Ohio River, close to Moundsville.

During this sudden attack, twenty-one of the soldiers were killed right away. Several others were badly hurt. This sad event became known as "Foreman’s Defeat." It was a difficult moment in the history of the region.
