Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park is a special state park in Nebraska. It's located about 6 miles (10 km) southeast of Burwell. This park helps us remember what a typical U.S. Army cavalry outpost looked like in the late 1800s. A cavalry outpost was like a small military base where soldiers on horseback (cavalry) lived and worked.
Fort Hartsuff was an active military base from 1874 to 1881. Today, you can still see some of its original buildings. These include the main headquarters, barracks where soldiers slept, officers' living quarters, the commanding officer's house, and the hospital. Other buildings have been rebuilt to look just like they did back then.
History of Fort Hartsuff
Fort Hartsuff was named after a brave soldier named George Lucas Hartsuff. He went to the West Point military school.
