'Fort Washakie (which in the Arapaho language is called Ce'eyeino'oowu) is a special community in Fremont County, Wyoming, United States. It's located inside the Wind River Indian Reservation and sits along U.S. Route 287. In 2010, about 1,759 people lived here.

Fort Washakie is an important place for the Eastern Shoshone Tribe. It's where their main offices are located. The Bureau of Indian Affairs also has an office here for the Wind River Indian Reservation. The community gets its name from a nearby U.S. Army post, which was set up in 1869. That post was named in 1878 after the respected Chief Washakie.

Where is Fort Washakie?

Fort Washakie is found at 42°59′57″N 108°54′42″W / 42.99917°N 108.91167°W / 42.99917; -108.91167. It's in the lower hills of the Wind River Range mountains. It's also just east of the Continental Divide, which is like a big line that separates where rivers flow either to the Atlantic or Pacific oceans.

The community covers an area of about 20.9 square miles (54.2 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water.

Based on information from 2000, there were 1,477 people living in Fort Washakie. Most of the people living here are Native American, mainly from the Eastern Shoshone tribe. There are also people of White background and other races. A small number of people are Hispanic or Latino.

Many households in Fort Washakie have children under 18 living with them. The average household has about three people. The community has a mix of ages, with many young people. The average age of residents is around 27 years old.

Education and Learning

Public schools in Fort Washakie are part of the Fremont County School District Number 21. This district helps provide education for the children in the community.

  • Many important services are in Fort Washakie, like the post office, police, fire department, a gas station, and a health clinic.
  • Several offices for the Shoshone Tribe are located here.
  • Southwest of town, you can find the site of the Shoshone Episcopal Mission. This used to be a mission school and the home of Reverend John Roberts.
  • Hines General Store, south of town, sells groceries and fresh produce.
  • The Wind Trading Company on Highway 287 has historical exhibits, supplies for beading, and souvenirs.
