Fortuna is a small city in Divide County, North Dakota, United States. In 2020, only 30 people lived there.
Fortuna was started in 1913. It was built along a Soo Line Railroad track that connected Flaxton, North Dakota, and Whitetail, Montana. The name "Fortuna" comes from the Roman goddess of luck and good fortune. Railroad officials picked this name because they hoped the new town would bring good luck and success to the settlers.
This city is very close to the border between Canada and the U.S., about six miles away. It's the northernmost city on U.S. Route 85 before the highway crosses into Canada at a place called Oungre, Saskatchewan.
Fortuna has a cool fact about sunsets! For a few days after the summer solstice (the longest day of the year), it has the latest sunset time in the lower 48 states. For example, on June 24, 2016, the sun set at 10:03 PM Central Daylight Time. This happens because Fortuna is located on the far western edge of its time zone. Even though some other towns are farther north, none are as far west in their time zone, which gives Fortuna its unique late sunsets.
