Ancient Times: First Inhabitants
Long before the Spanish arrived in Colombia, the area where Fosca is now was home to indigenous tribes. These included the Mau (also called Maco) and Guaypi (or Buchipa) people.
The Muisca, who lived north of this region, were very organized. They had a special group of brave warriors called guechas. These warriors were stationed in Fosca to protect the Muisca. They defended their land from the Guayupe people, who lived south of Fosca.
How Fosca Was Founded
The exact story of how Fosca was discovered and founded is a bit unclear. There are three main ideas about its beginning:
- Some say that Nikolaus Federmann founded the town on September 1, 1538.
- Others believe that Captain Pedro de Limpias discovered Fosca. He reached the area on February 5, 1538, during his trip from the Llanos Orientales.
- A third story suggests that Juan de Valcárcel passed through the area on February 5, 1627. He then moved the town center to a different location.
