History of the Fountain
The Fountain of Fame was ordered by King Philip V. He asked Pedro de Ribera, a famous architect, to build it. The work on the fountain started around 1731 and was finished in 1732.
Its first home was in a place called Plaza de Antón Martín in Madrid.
What the Fountain Looks Like
The fountain has a cool shape, like a four-leaf clover. Water flows from four dolphin statues. You can also see small angels holding seashells. There are also special spots with flowerpots.
At the very top of the fountain, there is a winged figure. This figure is Pheme, who is a goddess from ancient stories. She is shown playing a trumpet.
Moving and Repairing the Fountain
Over the years, the Fountain of Fame has moved a few times. Around 1880, it was taken apart. Some of its pieces were kept safe.
Then, in 1911, the fountain was put back together. This time, it was rebuilt by Ángel García in the Parque del Oeste. But it was damaged during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).
In 1941, the fountain found a new spot. It was placed near the Museum of Municipal History. This museum also has another work by Pedro de Ribera.
Because the fountain was sometimes damaged, a fence was put around it in 1999. This helps protect it for everyone to enjoy.
