History of Fox Point

People have lived in the Fox Point area for thousands of years. The first known groups were the Woodland period Mound Builders. They built large mounds of earth for burials and other purposes. Many of these mounds were later removed by farmers between 1850 and 1920.

In the early 1800s, scientists also found signs of Hopewell villages in the area. These were ancient communities that lived long ago.

Early European Settlement

The land became open to European and American settlers in the 1830s. This happened after the Potawatomi people signed a treaty in 1833. The first survey of the area was done that same year. The U.S. government started selling land in Fox Point in 1835.

Surveyors in the mid-1800s noticed a piece of land that looked like a fox's nose sticking into Lake Michigan. This spot is now Doctor's Park. They first called it "Foxes Point." Later, people shortened the name to "Fox Point."

The area became part of the Town of Milwaukee in 1835. Many people bought land to cut down the old-growth forests for timber. The first person to settle permanently was Cephas Buttles in 1843.

Dutch and German Settlers

In the mid-1840s, many Dutch families started moving to the Town of Milwaukee. John Cappon was the first Dutch settler in Fox Point in 1846. By 1855, over 20 Dutch families lived there.

These early settlers farmed the land. They grew crops like wheat, barley, rye, and corn. In 1848, they built their first one-room schoolhouse. Two more were built in 1852, including the Old Dutch Schoolhouse Site. This site is now a Milwaukee County landmark.

Later in the 1800s, more people moved to Fox Point. Calvin Reeves, a formerly enslaved man, moved there after the American Civil War. German immigrants also began arriving in the 1860s. They formed St. John's Lutheran Church in 1866.

Growth and Modernization

Fox Point changed a lot in the 1890s. Many of the original Dutch farmers moved to other areas. At the same time, wealthy people from Milwaukee started building summer homes by the lake. It was easy to get there by train, and later by streetcar.

In 1898, the Fox Point Club opened. It was the second golf course in Wisconsin. This club brought even more wealthy residents to the area.

The rural Town of Milwaukee did not offer services like electricity or running water. By the 1920s, the wealthier residents wanted better services. So, Fox Point officially became a village in 1926. It formed its own school district in 1927. The village also started creating parks, like Doctors Park, which opened in 1930.

After World War II, Fox Point grew very quickly. The population jumped from 1,180 people in 1940 to 7,939 in 1970. The village also gained more land in 1954. This happened when Fox Point and nearby villages joined together to prevent the City of Milwaukee from expanding too much.
