Who Was Frédéric Etsou?
Frédéric Etsou was taught by Catholic missionaries when he was young. In 1959, he joined the CICM missionaries. He became a priest on July 13, 1958. He was sent to work in the city of Leopoldville. Later, he studied sociology and theology in France and Belgium. He returned to Congo in the late 1960s.
Becoming a Church Leader
Etsou became the Archbishop of Mbandaka-Bikoro on November 11, 1977. Then, in 1990, he became the Archbishop of Kinshasa. On June 28, 1991, Pope John Paul II named him a Cardinal-Priest of S. Lucia a Piazza d'Armi. He took over this role from Joseph-Albert Cardinal Malula, who was the first Cardinal from Zaire (which is now the DRC).
Cardinal Etsou became the head of Congo's Catholic Church during the last years of the long-time leader Mobutu Sese Seko. After Mobutu was no longer in power in 1997, Cardinal Etsou spoke out. He talked about the new leader, Laurent Kabila, using harsh methods. Laurent Kabila was the father of the current president of the DRC, Joseph Kabila. Joseph Kabila became president in 2001 after his father passed away.

He also said that some government officials were taking money from the state. He asked them to resign. These statements caused some tension in the capital city.
