Francesca Michielin (born February 25, 1995) is a talented Italian singer, songwriter, and TV host. She became famous after winning the fifth season of the Italian TV show X Factor. Since then, she has released five albums and many hit songs. Four of her songs reached number one in Italy, and she has sold over 1.3 million copies of her music!
Her first song, "Distratto", went straight to number one in Italy. This made her the first female X Factor winner to do so. Francesca's first album, Riflessi di me, came out in 2012. She also worked with Italian rapper Fedez on popular songs like "Cigno nero" and "Magnifico".
Over the years, Francesca has released more successful albums like di20 (2015) and 2640 (2018). She also had many hit songs, including "L'amore esiste", "Nessun grado di separazione", and "Vulcano". In 2020, she released her fourth album, Feat (stato di natura), and Cani sciolti in 2023.
Francesca has competed twice in the Sanremo Music Festival, a very important Italian music contest. She came in second place both times: in 2016 with "Nessun grado di separazione" and in 2021 with "Chiamami per nome" alongside Fedez. In 2016, she even represented Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest. She has also been nominated for several awards for her music.

Early Life and Music Journey
Francesca Michielin was born in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. She has an older brother named Filippo. Her musical journey began early. At age 9, she started playing the piano. Later, she learned to play the electric bass.
When she was 14, Francesca sang in her hometown's gospel choir. Her brother helped her discover rock music. She was inspired by artists like Bon Iver and Adele. After hearing Adele's first album, Francesca started writing her own songs on the piano. In high school, she even formed a punk rock girl band called Monkey Nuts, where she played bass.
Francesca was a good student. Even while pursuing her music career, she continued her studies. In 2014, she earned her high school diploma. In 2022, she graduated with honors in jazz singing from a music conservatory.
Music Career Highlights
2011–2012: X Factor Win and First Album
When Francesca was 16, a sound technician heard her sing and encouraged her to try out for X Factor. She sang "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin and joined the show. Her mentor, Simona Ventura, helped her. During the show, she sang songs by Adele, The Doors, and Stevie Wonder.
On December 29, 2011, Francesca sang her first original song, "Distratto". It was written by Elisa and Roberto Casalino. On January 5, 2012, Francesca won X Factor! She received a recording contract with Sony Music.
Her song "Distratto" was released right after her win. It quickly reached number one on the Italian charts. The song was certified double platinum, meaning it sold over 60,000 copies. Francesca also released an EP (a mini-album) called Distratto. In February 2012, she performed at the Sanremo Music Festival as a guest.
Francesca's second song, "Sola", came out in August 2012. This song was part of her first full album, Riflessi di me. She worked with producer Andrea Rigonat and singer-songwriters Elisa and Roberto Casalino on the album. Francesca also helped write three songs on the album.
2013–2014: Popular Collaborations
In March 2013, Francesca worked with Italian rapper Fedez on the song "Cigno nero". Francesca helped write this song, which became a hit.
In 2014, Francesca performed in a play called La ragazza con l'orecchino di perla. She also released a new song, "Amazing". This English song was part of the soundtrack for the movie The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Later in 2014, Francesca teamed up with Fedez again for the song "Magnifico". This song was a huge success! It reached number one in Italy and was certified triple platinum.
2015–2016: di20, Sanremo, and Eurovision
In 2014, Francesca announced she was working on new music. Her song "L'amore esiste" was released in March 2015. It was a top ten hit in Italy and won an award. This song was the first single from her second album, di20. Other songs from the album included "Battito di ciglia" and "Lontano".
In January 2016, Francesca started her first concert tour called "Nice to Meet You". A live EP from the tour was released. In February 2016, she competed in the 66th Sanremo Music Festival with "Nessun grado di separazione". She came in second place. The winning band, Stadio, decided not to go to Eurovision. So, Francesca was chosen to represent Italy!
For Eurovision, Francesca sang a new version of her song called "No Degree of Separation". It had an English chorus. In the final, she placed 16th. "Nessun grado di separazione" became a number one hit in Italy. It was also added to a new version of her album, di20are.
Later in 2016, she released "Un cuore in due" and "Almeno tu" as singles from the album. "Almeno tu" was also featured in the movie Piuma.
2017–2018: 2640 Album Release
In 2017, Francesca announced she was working on her third album, 2640. She recorded it in Los Angeles with producer Michele Canova. The first song from the album, "Vulcano", came out in July 2017. Its music video was filmed in Berlin. "Vulcano" was certified platinum in Italy.
"Io non abito al mare" was the second song released from the album in November 2017. Its music video was filmed at Cretto di Burri. This song talks about how hard it can be to communicate and the importance of showing kindness. It also became a platinum hit in Italy.
"Bolivia" was the third single from 2640. Francesca wrote the screenplay for its music video. She said the song criticizes people who think moving to an exotic place will solve their problems, when often the problem is inside themselves. "Tropicale" was released as the fourth single.
In May 2018, Francesca sang on the song "Fotografia" by Carl Brave, along with Fabri Fibra. In November 2018, she released a new song called "Femme". A special vinyl edition of 2640 was released, including these new songs.
Francesca also wrote the music for a short film called A Cup of Coffee with Marylin. It was shown at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
2019–2021: Feat (Stato di natura) and Sanremo Return
In November 2019, Francesca announced her return to music with the song "Cheyenne", featuring Charlie Charles. This was the first song from her fourth album, Feat (stato di natura). The album came out in March 2020. It had 11 songs, all featuring other artists, exploring the idea of nature and city life.
Before the album, Francesca held special concerts where she premiered new songs. "Gange" with Shiva and "Riserva naturale" with Coma Cose were released. "Monolocale" with Fabri Fibra also debuted. The album reached number 7 in Italy. The song "Stato di natura" featuring Måneskin was the second single.
In February 2020, Francesca performed at the 70th Sanremo Music Festival with Levante and Maria Antonietta. She also participated in a charity event during the COVID-19 lockdown.
In January 2021, Francesca released "Cattive stelle" with Vasco Brondi. In February, she started her podcast called Maschiacci, where she interviewed famous people about fighting gender stereotypes.
In March 2021, she performed "Chiamami per nome" with Fedez at the 71st Sanremo Music Festival. They were favorites to win and came in second place. This was their third time working together. The song became number one in Italy. Francesca also sang with Samuel on "Cinema" and recorded "Nei tuoi occhi" for the movie Marilyn's Eyes.
2022–2023: Hosting and Cani sciolti
Francesca was the orchestra conductor for Emma Marrone at the Sanremo Music Festival 2022. She also sang with Emma on a cover of "...Baby One More Time". Soon after, Francesca graduated with honors in Jazz Singing.
In 2021, she started working on Effetto serra, a TV show for Sky Nature. In this show, she interviewed experts about how to live in a more environmentally friendly way. Her first book, Il cuore è un organo, was published in March 2022.
In March 2022, Francesca also started producing music. She produced the song "Liberi" for rapper Fabri Fibra's album Caos, and she also sang on the track. Her songs "Bonsoir" and "Occhi grandi grandi" were released in 2022.
In Fall 2022, Francesca returned to X Factor, but this time as the host! She also performed a series of live shows in Milan. A tour celebrating her first ten years in music, called "Bonsoir! – Michielin10", took place in Italian theaters in 2023.
Francesca's fifth album, Cani sciolti, was released on February 24, 2023.
2024–Present: Return to Sanremo
In December 2024, it was announced that Francesca Michielin will be one of the artists competing in the Sanremo Music Festival 2025.
