Portrait of Francis Barrett, author of the book The Magus (1801)

Francis Barrett was an English occultist, born probably in London around 1770–1780. He was known for his interest in magic and ancient wisdom. He died sometime after 1802.

Who Was Francis Barrett?

Francis Barrett said he was a student of chemistry, metaphysics (the study of what is real), and natural philosophy. People thought he was quite unusual because he taught magic lessons from his home. He also carefully translated old texts, including some about Kabbalah, which is a system of Jewish mysticism. One of his translations was a German book called Philosophy of The Universe in 1801. His biographer, Francis X. King, wrote that Barrett's parents were ordinary people who married in 1772.

The Magus: A Book of Magic

What is The Magus?

Barrett was very keen on bringing back interest in magical arts. So, he published a book called The Magus. This book was a collection of writings from other famous authors. It mostly included parts from Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa. It also used parts from the Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy and a translation of the Heptameron of Peter of Abano. Barrett updated the spelling and grammar to make it easier to read.

What Did The Magus Teach?

The Magus covered many topics related to natural magic. It talked about the magic of herbs and stones. It also explored magnetism, talismanic magic (using special charms), and alchemy (turning common metals into gold). Other subjects included numerology (the study of numbers), the elements (like earth, air, fire, water), and stories of famous adepts (skilled practitioners) from history.

Barrett's Magic School

The Magus was also used to find new students. Barrett put an advertisement in his book. He wanted to find people who were interested in joining his magic group or school. This school was meant to have no more than twelve students.

The advertisement explained what students would learn:

  • They would study natural philosophy and natural magic.
  • They would learn about the Kabbalah, chemistry, and the art of talismans.
  • Students would also explore Hermeticism (ancient wisdom), astrology (study of stars), and physiognomy (reading faces).
  • The school aimed to help students discover nature's secrets.
  • It also wanted to help people think about wisdom and improve themselves.
  • A big goal was to help others and make the world a happier place.

Barrett's Beliefs About Magic

Witches and Power

When Barrett wrote about witches, he had an interesting view. He did not believe that their power to harm people came from Satan. He thought that if the the Devil wanted to hurt someone, he wouldn't need a witch to do it.

Where Magic Comes From

Barrett believed that magical power came from inside a person. He wrote that a part of our inner self connects with things outside of us. When a person is in the right state of mind, they can make a special connection between themselves and an object. This connection is where magical power comes from.
