Early Life and Education
Francis was born in Modena. He was baptized just five days after his birth. Emperor Franz I of Austria was his godfather.
When he was young, Francis had special teachers. In 1826, Count Clemente Coronini became his main tutor. Later, in 1829, Baron Ernest Geramb took over his education.
Royal Honors and Family
Francis received many honors during his life. In 1836, he became a Knight of the Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece. Three years later, he received another important award, the Grand Cordon of the Dutch Order of the Lion.
After his mother passed away in 1840, some people believed Francis should be the rightful king of England, Scotland, and Ireland. This group was known as the Jacobites.
On March 30, 1842, Francis married Princess Adelgunde of Bavaria. She was the daughter of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Their wedding took place in Munich.
Francis and Adelgunde had one child, a daughter named Princess Anna Beatrice. Sadly, she was born in October 1848 and passed away in July 1849.
Becoming Duke of Modena
Francis received another honor in 1842. This was the Savoy Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation.
When his father, Francis IV of Modena, died on January 21, 1846, Francis became the new Duke of Modena. He also inherited titles like Duke of Reggio and Mirandola. Later, in 1847, he also became the Duke of Guastalla.
Challenges and Loss of Power
During the revolutions of 1848, many parts of Italy saw big changes. Francis was forced to leave his duchy because of a popular uprising. However, Austrian soldiers helped him return and regain control the next year.
In 1855, Francis created his own special award. It was called the Order of the Eagle of Este. He was the main leader of this new order.
In 1859, the Duchy of Modena was invaded. Armies from France and Piedmont took over his lands. Francis had to flee on June 14. On March 18, 1860, Modena officially became part of the new Kingdom of Italy. Francis protested this decision.
Later Life and Legacy
After losing his duchy, Francis moved to Vienna, Austria. He lived in a grand building called the Palais Modena. He also had a summer home in Bavaria. Even though he lived mostly in Austria, he sometimes traveled. In 1864, he visited the Middle East.
Francis V passed away in Vienna on November 20, 1875. He left most of his wealth to his relative, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Francis was buried in the Capuchin Church in Vienna.
