Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia (Spanish: Francisco Ferrer Guardia; 10 January 1859 – 13 October 1909) was a Spanish Catalan thinker and educator. He believed in new ways of thinking about society and education. He is often known as Francisco Ferrer.
Early Life and Ideas
Francesc Ferrer was born in Alella, a small town near Barcelona, Spain. He was interested in new ideas about how society should work. Because of his beliefs, he moved to Paris, France, in 1885.
In 1901, Ferrer returned to Spain. He had a big dream to change education. He opened a special school called The Modern School. This school was free for students. It taught new ideas about how people could learn and live together.
The Modern School
The Modern School was different from other schools. It focused on teaching students to think for themselves. Ferrer believed that education should help children become free thinkers. He wanted them to question things and learn in a way that made sense to them.
The school taught many subjects. It also encouraged students to be kind and fair. It was a place where kids could learn without strict rules.
Challenges and Legacy
In 1906, Ferrer faced a difficult time. He was arrested and accused of being involved in an attack on King Alphonso XIII. He was held in jail for a year. While he was in jail, The Modern School had to close down.
After he was released in 1907, Ferrer wrote a book. It was called The Origins and Ideals of the Modern School. This book shared his ideas about education. It explained why he believed in his special school.
Sadly, in 1909, Ferrer was arrested again. This happened during a time of unrest in Spain called the Tragic Week. He was found guilty without clear proof. He was then executed by a firing squad in Barcelona on October 13.
After his death, many people around the world were inspired by Ferrer's ideas. They started their own "Modern Schools" in places like the United States. These schools continued his dream of a different kind of education. The first one opened in New York City in 1911.
