Francisco Capiral San Diego (born October 10, 1935 – died August 26, 2015) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in the Philippines. He was known as the Bishop-Emeritus of the Diocese of Pasig. A diocese is a special area managed by a bishop. The Diocese of Pasig is part of the Archdiocese of Manila in the Metro Manila region of the Philippines.

Life and Education
Francisco Capiral San Diego was born on October 10, 1935. His birthplace was Lawa, a town in Obando, Bulacan. He went to Obando Elementary School for his early education. Later, he attended Western Colleges in Naic, Cavite, for high school. He was the second-highest-ranking student, known as the salutatorian.
He then studied a special Latin course at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Minor Seminary. After that, he went to San Carlos Seminary. There, he studied philosophy and theology, which are important subjects for future priests.
Becoming a Priest
On December 21, 1963, Francisco San Diego became a priest. He was ordained by Hernando Antiporda, who was an Auxiliary Bishop of Manila. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop of an archdiocese.
Church Service
In the year after his ordination, San Diego was appointed as a parochial vicar. This means he was an assistant priest at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati. In 1971, he became the main parish priest there.
He also worked for the Metropolitan Matrimonial Tribunal of Manila. This group handles church-related marriage cases. He served there from 1964 to 1983. From 1977 to 1979, he was a vicar forane. This role means he oversaw a group of parishes in the Our Lady of Guadalupe area.
Further Studies and Teaching
In 1979, he earned a special degree called a Licentiate in Canon Law. Canon Law is the set of rules and laws of the Catholic Church. He received this degree with high honors, known as cum laude, from the University of Santo Tomas.
He spent some years teaching at San Carlos Seminary in Makati. He also taught at Our Lady of the Angels Seminary in Novaliches, Quezon City. He was appointed as an Episcopal Vicar for the Makati area. An Episcopal Vicar helps the bishop manage a specific part of the diocese.
In 1981, San Diego became the parish priest of San Felipe Neri Parish in Mandaluyong. In the same year, Pope John Paul II gave him the title of Monsignor. This is an honorary title given to priests who have done special service for the Church.
Becoming a Bishop
On August 10, 1983, Francisco San Diego was consecrated as a bishop. This important ceremony was led by Archbishop Bruno Torpigliani. He was the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines. An Apostolic Nuncio is like an ambassador for the Pope in a country.
From 1983 to 1987, he served as a Coadjutor Apostolic Vicar of Palawan. This means he was a bishop who helped lead the Church in Palawan. He then became the main apostolic vicar from 1987 to 1995. He also served as a pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Narra, Palawan, from 1983 to 1985. From 1985 to 1988, he was the rector of Seminario de San Jose in Puerto Princesa City. A rector is the head of a seminary, which is a school for training priests.
Leading Dioceses
In 1995, he became the second bishop of the Diocese of San Pablo in Laguna. While he was bishop there, he oversaw the building of a new Bishop's Residence and Chancery Office in San Pablo City.
In 2003, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop San Diego as the very first bishop of Pasig. This was a new and important role.
Retirement and Passing
On December 21, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI accepted Bishop San Diego's retirement. Bishops usually retire when they reach 75 years old, as required by Church law. Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales, who was the Archbishop of Manila, was then named the temporary leader of the Pasig diocese. This role is called an Apostolic Administrator.
On April 20, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI named Mylo Hubert Claudio Vergara as the new bishop of Pasig. Bishop Vergara was from Pasig and had been the bishop of San Jose in Nueva Ecija.
Bishop Francisco San Diego passed away on August 26, 2015. He was 79 years old and died due to cardiac arrest.
