Frank John Glieber (born April 5, 1934 – died May 1, 1985) was a famous American sportscaster. He was known for his exciting play-by-play calls of many different sports.

Frank Glieber's Early Life and Career

Frank Glieber was born and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the oldest child in his family. His parents, John and Mary, had moved to the U.S. from Austria and Germany.

Frank went to Northwestern University and earned his degree in 1956. After college, he moved to the Dallas area. He started his career in the 1950s by broadcasting local sports games on radio stations.

In 1965, Frank moved to Cleveland. There, he became the sports director at WJW-TV. For two years, in 1966 and 1967, he also called the CBS broadcasts for the Cleveland Browns' NFL games. He worked with Warren Lahr, who added extra commentary.

Returning to Dallas and Local Sports

Frank Glieber returned to Dallas in 1968. He became the sports director for KRLD radio. He called play-by-play for local college basketball and minor league baseball teams. He also worked as a color commentator for Dallas Cowboys games.

From 1978 to 1980, Frank was a television announcer for the Texas Rangers baseball team. He was recognized many times for his talent. Frank Glieber was named Texas Sportscaster of the Year seven times!

Frank Glieber's Time with CBS Sports

In 1963, Frank Glieber started a long and successful career with CBS television. For more than 20 years, he broadcast many different sports events for the network.

He covered NFL football, NBA and NCAA basketball, and professional bowling. He also called tennis matches, NASL soccer, and golf tournaments. This included the famous Masters Tournament every spring.

Even while working for CBS, Frank continued to broadcast local sports in the Dallas area. He sometimes worked as many as sixteen hours a day! He was also a commentator for the World Series of Poker.

Frank Glieber's Passing

Frank Glieber passed away in 1985 at the age of 51. He collapsed while jogging at a fitness center in Dallas. He was survived by his wife, Kathy, and his five children.

After Frank's passing, Tom Brookshier took his place in the NFL on CBS broadcast booth. Frank Glieber's last job for CBS Sports was calling Game 1 of the 1985 NBA Playoffs series. This game was between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Los Angeles Lakers. Frank called this game with James Brown.
