After West Point, he became a second lieutenant in the Army's Infantry. His first assignments took him to different forts in places like Dakota Territory and Arizona.
Moving Up in the Ranks
Albright's early career involved moving to various army posts across the country. In 1895, he was promoted to first lieutenant. He also spent time teaching military science at the University of North Dakota. This helped him gain more experience and leadership skills.
Fighting in Wars
Frank Albright was a soldier during a time of many changes and conflicts for the United States. He served in three important wars.
Spanish-American War
When the Spanish–American War began in 1898, Albright helped prepare soldiers for duty. He led a company of soldiers from North Dakota in Puerto Rico. This was an important step in his military career. In March 1899, he was promoted to captain.
Philippine-American War
Soon after, in August 1899, Albright and his regiment were sent to the Philippines to fight in the Philippine–American War. He commanded Company E and served in different towns there. After his service overseas, he returned to the United States in 1902.
Continued Service and Promotions
After the wars, Albright continued his army career. From 1903 to 1905, he taught military science at Purdue University. He then returned to commanding troops at various forts, including Fort Reno and Fort Bliss, Texas.
He also served as a commissary officer, which meant he was in charge of supplies for his regiment. He was promoted to major in 1911. He then commanded a battalion of the 14th Infantry Regiment in places like North Dakota and Washington. In 1914, he attended the United States Army War College, a special school for high-ranking officers. After graduating, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1916.
World War I Service
In May 1917, as the United States entered World War I, Albright was promoted to colonel. Soon after, on August 5, 1917, he became a temporary brigadier general. This was a very high rank!
