Frankie Faison (born June 10, 1949) is an American actor. He is famous for playing different characters in TV shows and movies. Some of his well-known roles include Ervin Burrell in the TV series The Wire. He also played Barney Matthews in the Hannibal Lecter movies. Another popular role was Sugar Bates in the series Banshee.

Frankie Faison's Early Life and Schooling

Frankie Faison was born in Newport News, Virginia. His parents were Carmena and Edgar Faison. He loved acting from a young age.

He went to Illinois Wesleyan University to study drama. After that, he earned a special degree called a Master of Fine Arts. He got this degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1974.

Frankie Faison's Acting Career

Frankie Faison started his acting journey in 1974. His first big role was in a play called King Lear. He acted alongside a famous actor named James Earl Jones. Later, he worked with James Earl Jones again in a play called Fences. For this play, Frankie Faison was nominated for a special award called a Tony Award.

He started acting in movies in 1980. He had small roles in films like Permanent Vacation. In 1986, he played Lt. Fisk in Manhunter. He also appeared in the comedy The Money Pit and the movie Maximum Overdrive.

Frankie Faison worked with Eddie Murphy and James Earl Jones in the movie Coming to America (1988). He also had a role in the 1989 film Do the Right Thing. He is well-known for appearing in many movies based on the Hannibal Lecter books. He played Barney, Lecter's jailer, in The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Red Dragon.

In the early 1990s, he was in a TV show called True Colors. In 1998, he was a regular on the science-fiction TV show Prey. He also played Jim Lewis, a freed slave, in the 2003 movie Gods and Generals.

One of his most famous roles was as Police Commissioner Ervin Burrell in the HBO series The Wire. This show was very popular. He also appeared in Tyler Perry's movie Meet the Browns in 2008.

From 2009 to 2012, Frankie Faison played Richard Evans on the TV show One Life to Live. He also had roles in Blue Bloods and Lie to Me. A major role for him was Sugar Bates in the Cinemax show Banshee. He also played Henry "Pop" Hunter in the Netflix series Luke Cage. In 2017, he appeared in a music video for the band The War on Drugs.
