Franklin is a city in Kentucky, United States. It is the main city and county seat of Simpson County. This county is located on the southern border of Kentucky. In 2020, about 10,176 people lived in Franklin.

A famous horse racing track called Kentucky Downs is in Franklin. It used to be known as Dueling Grounds Racetrack. Kentucky Downs hosts big horse racing events like the Kentucky Cup Turf Festival. You can also watch races from other places there all year long.

History of Franklin

Franklin officially became a city on November 2, 1820. The state assembly made it official. The city was built on a piece of land bought from William Hudspeth. It was named after Benjamin Franklin, one of America's Founding Fathers. The first post office opened in Franklin on September 29, 1822.

A fun fact about Franklin's history: on March 1, 1968, famous singers Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash got married here. Their wedding took place at the Franklin First United Methodist Church.
