Franklin Falls Pond is a beautiful body of water in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. It was formed when a dam was built across the Saranac River. The pond is quite large, covering about 439 acres. It stretches for 2.7 miles and is located about 3 miles northeast of Lower Saranac Lake.
This pond is also an important part of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. This trail is a very long water path, about 740 miles in total. It begins in Old Forge, NY, and ends far away in Fort Kent, ME.
History of Franklin Falls Pond
Long ago, the area near the falls at the northern end of the pond was a busy little village. It had a sawmill and a hotel. Sadly, a big fire in 1852 destroyed everything in the hamlet. After the fire, the hotel and sawmill were rebuilt.
Later, a man named Paul Smith bought the land around the falls. He was the owner of Paul Smith's Hotel. Smith decided to build a hydroelectric plant there. A hydroelectric plant uses the power of moving water to create electricity. Building this plant caused about 270 acres of land to flood, which meant many trees were lost.
There was some disagreement about the construction. However, Paul Smith continued with his plans. Today, the old village is gone. All that remains is a modern hydroelectric dam. This dam still holds back the waters of Franklin Falls Pond.]
