Frasquita Larrea (born Francisca Javiera Ruiz de Larrea y Aherán, 1775–1838) was an important Spanish writer. She was known for inspiring many famous "romantic gatherings" in Cádiz. These were like popular social events where people discussed art and ideas during the time of the Cortes of Cádiz.

About Frasquita Larrea

Frasquita Larrea was born on December 24, 1775, in Cádiz, Spain. Her full name was Francisca Javiera Josefa Gregoria Ruiz de Larrea y Aherán.

Her father, Antonio Ruiz de Larrea y Gonzáles de Lopidana, was a successful Spanish merchant. Her mother, Francisca Xaviera Aheran y Malone, was an Irish woman living in Spain. Her mother had studied in England and also lived for a short time in France.

Her Love for Books

Frasquita loved to read and study. She enjoyed the works of famous writers and thinkers. These included William Shakespeare, Immanuel Kant, and René Descartes.

She was also greatly influenced by the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft. Wollstonecraft was a very early supporter of women's rights. Frasquita kept Wollstonecraft's books by her bedside, showing how much they meant to her.

Her Family Life

Around 1790, while in Cadiz, Frasquita met Johann Nikolaus Böhl de Faber. He was a German scholar who loved Spanish culture. He lived in the area at the time.

They decided to get married in a Catholic ceremony. Even though he was not Catholic, they agreed to follow her family's traditions. They married on February 1, 1796. They had four children together. Their first child, Cecilia, later became a famous writer herself.

Her Writings

Frasquita Larrea mainly wrote short stories and other short pieces of writing. She left behind many writings and memories that were never published during her lifetime.

Later, a writer named Antonio Orozco collected and wrote about her works. He published them in his book, "La gaditana Fransquita Larrea, the First Spanish Romantic."

Inspiration from Cádiz

Frasquita spent most of her summers in Cádiz. She felt that this city was where she found the most inspiration for her writing.

She wrote her "Bornos Diaries" in a summer house. This house was owned by Thomas Osborne Mann, who was her son-in-law.

Her daughter, Cecilia Francisca Böhl de Faber y Ruiz de Larrea, also became a writer. She used a special pen name, Fernán Caballero.
