Fratton is a busy area in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. It's mostly a place where people live, but it used to have many factories. You'll see lots of Victorian-style houses here. These are typical of many homes in Portsmouth. Fratton is also known for its many discount shops and small cafes. It even has a shopping centre called the Bridge Centre, which includes a large Asda supermarket.
Fratton's Past: A Look Back
Long ago, Fratton was a small countryside village. It was originally called Froddington. There was a farm called Goldsmith's Farm and an open space known as Fratton Common. The only reminder of this old name today is a pub called "The Froddington Arms."
As the Industrial Age began, Portsmouth grew bigger. In the 1870s and 1880s, new houses were built. This meant that more of the land around Fratton became part of the city.
Fun Facts About Fratton
- You might know that Portsmouth F.C. has a famous stadium called Fratton Park. But here's a secret: it's not actually in the Fratton area! The stadium was built between 1898 and 1899. It was built on farmland near the village of Milton. This area is on the eastern side of Portsea Island.
- Fratton Park is still in the Milton area of Portsmouth. You can tell by its postcode, "PO4 8RA." The "PO4" part means it's in Milton. Fratton and Portsmouth city centre use "PO1" postcodes. The streets around Fratton Park are officially part of the "Milton Ward." This is for local and national elections.
- The railway line, called the Portsmouth Direct Line, marks the border between Fratton and Milton. Fratton Park is south of this railway line. So, it's definitely in the Milton area.
- The name "Fratton Park" was chosen on purpose in 1899. It was a clever way to make people think the football ground was closer to Fratton railway and tram station. This made it seem easier to get to. Fratton railway station is about one mile from Fratton Park. It's about a ten-minute walk along Goldsmith Avenue.
